Dakota Commemorative March

The Route of the March


'We hope to have members participate from all our Dakota communities of Prairie Island, Prior Lake, Upper Sioux, Lower Sioux, Fort Totten, Santee, Lake Traverse, Flandreau, Sioux Valley, Pipestone, Bird Tail, Portage la Prairie, Wahpeton and Standing Buffalo.'

The Dakota Commemorative March 2006
begins on Tuesday, November 7th.

The march will begin at 7:00 am from the Lower Sioux Agency Interpretive Center, Redwood County Road 2.

Day 1: November 7th

Begin march on Redwood Co. Rd 2, Lower Sioux Interpretive Center, to 305 St. (gravel road, just past Wabasha's Village Site sign) (approximately 2.2 miles)

Left turn onto 305 St., continue across Redwood Co. Rd.11. This gravel road becomes Redwood Co. Rd. 8.

Continue southeast on Co. Rd 8, across MN highway 4, which is Brown Co. 10; Continue on Co. Rd. 10. The march will stop 1/2 hour before sunset.

Walkers will return by car caravan to the Lower Sioux Community Center for an evening meal and sleep site.

Day 2: November 8th

Car caravans with marchers will leave the Lower Sioux Community Center at 7:00 am to return to Brown Co. Rd. 10 .

Begin march on Brown Co. Rd. 10 to MN highway 29.

Turn east on MN highway 29.

Turn south on 210th St. (gravel road) to KC Road (gravel road)

Continue east on KC Road to Broadway (in New Ulm)

Continue east on Broadway to Minnesota Avenue (in New Ulm)

Continue on Minnesota Avenue until 1/2 hour before sunset, or to Minnesota and 20th St. S.

Walkers will be transported via car caravan to Turner Hall (1st South and State Street), where marchers will be provided an evening meal, sleeping spaces, and breakfast meal the following morning by the Turner Hall Society.

Day 3: November 9th

Car caravans with marchers will leave Turner Hall at 7:00 am to 20th St. S and Highway 15/68.

Begin march on MN highway 15/68

Continue on MN highway 68 toward Mankato until 1/2 hour before sunet, or to Land of Memories Park entrance.

Evening meal and sleep site provided by the Centenary United Methodist Church, 501 South 2nd, Mankato (across from Post Office).

Day 4: November 10th

Car caravans with marchers will leave site at 7:30am to Traverse de Sioux Treaty Site on US highway 169 north of St. Peter.

Begin march on US highway 169 at Treaty Site

Continue on US highway 169 to MN highway 93

Continue on MN highway 93 to Henderson.

Marchers will be hosted in Henderson at the Brown Interpretive Center

Day 5: November 11th

Begin march at 7:30 am in Henderson on MN highway 19 to Henderson Station Road (gravel road)

Continue along Henderson Station Road to Scott Co. Rd. 5

Continue east on Co Rd. 5 to US highway 169

Continue North on US 169 to to 1/2 mile from construction zone. Marchers will carpool 4 miles through the construction zone and begin the march 1/2 mile after construction, continuing on 169 to Jordan or 1/2 hour before sunset.

Evening meal and sleep site at the Tiowakan Church in Prior Lake.

Day 6: November 12th

Marchers will leave at 7:30 am to be transported to Jordan, meeting at St. John the Baptist School parking lot on Broadway.

Continue on Co. Rd. 282 to north on Co. Rd. 17 (Marschall Road) to east on Co. Rd. 42, to Dakotah Parkway in the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

Continue on the road that leads to Tiowakan. Marchers will sleep at the Tiowakan with an evening meal provided by the Shakopee Community Dakota Women's Society.

Day 7: November 13th

Marchers will leave the sleep site at 8:30 am to be transported to MN highway 13.

Begin march on MN highway 13 Savage area.

Continue along MN highway 13 to MN 110/55

Turn North onto MN highway 55 across Mendota Bridge.

Walkers will continue down from the bridge into Fort Snelling State Park concentration camp site.

Car caravans will continue across the Mendota Bridge to exit west onto MN 5. Cars will continue on MN 5, past the airport exit, and exit Post Road. At the top of the exit ramp, cars turn left, across the freeway, into Fort Snelling State Park.

Closing Dinner will be held at St. Peter's Church in Mendota
